Meet Guy Deysel from Howick in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Guy has a special talent and loves to share it with others. For most of his life, Guy has been singing and playing his guitar, at times working as a professional musician. Through music, he has brought much joy into the lives of others. In the years since he decided to focus on his career as a telecoms technician, he has often volunteered to play at weddings and anniversary parties, without asking for anything in return.
This was not enough for Guy, a truly generous person who wanted to share his love of music more widely. A couple of years ago, he made the decision to play for those people who can most benefit from a live music experience, even if he doesn’t know them. He now spends his time singing at old age homes and hospitals in Howick, Pietermaritzburg, and the surrounding areas.
He plays music while his wife Gloria and mother-in-law join in to support him. Often they take freshly baked goods along with them to share. As one person who has watched Guy playing explains: “I had the pleasure of watching Guy play for a group of people at a Pietermaritzburg old age home and it touched me very deeply. People who had been sitting still and staring into space all day became animated and moved their bodies to the music. People who had suffered severe strokes were smiling and moving their heads to the music, their eyes alive with enjoyment. He played for an hour and in that hour I saw a group of people who were seemingly coexisting, completely unconnected, connect with the music and in doing so, connecting with one another. It’s was a special thing to see and it really does just go to show that a little help really can go a long way.”
Guy would like to play for more people across the province, and Gloria and Mary would like to bake for all of them. The only thing holding them back is the cost of petrol and baking ingredients. Any material contributions on this score will have them singing all the way to their next concert. Guy is a great example of how sharing your talent for music can bring a great deal of joy to others.
