Meet Carol Holby. Every Sunday her family and a dedicated group of volunteers share a cooked meal with needy people in the area. Mrs Holby started this work 35 years ago, by bringing food to her son’s Sunday school class.
Over time, word has spread and people have come to rely on the meals that they receive each week. As Carol explains: “I invite people to receive a meal at my home as I want to give them a sense of dignity and respect. They are poor and they have lost so much already.”
In fact, each week Carol, together with a team of volunteers prepares 2000 meals – a process that takes up most of the weekend. Aside from the people that eat at her home, take-aways are given for other needy members of the community. The challenges are evident, but Carol firmly believes that anyone can make a difference – if they choose to do so “I have health issues, my husband is a pensioner and I do not work. I also do not drive, so there are many reasons for me to not do this work.”
Each Christmas and Easter, Carol hosts a special meal. This year, she is hoping to be able to give out Easter eggs and hot cross buns. Other than that, food is needed on a regular basis, as well as crockery, cutlery and anything else that can be spared.
When asked why she continues to make these meals every week, Carol replies: “I do this work for the simple reason of love. When I see children and the elderly that have so little, it just breaks my heart.”
